Materials and Notes.

Parents, please designate a box or shelf for storage of your child’s maker supplies, tools and equipment.

  • Class 1 – Mon 9/21 – Introduction to the Historic Pike and The Pike Projects.
  • Required Materials:
  • The Pike Stories Encyclopaedia- A youth created comic book – Included in price of class. Pick up at the kiosk or we will mail or deliver to you for an additional $5.
  • Pencil
  • Sharpener
  • Blank paper
  • Protractor (optional)
  • Compass or round lids of various sizes
  • 12″ ruler
  • colored pencils and/or fine/medium point markers.
  • Recommended Materials: The Pike book by the Historical Society of Long Beach (available from the HSLB in Bixby Knolls 4260 Atlantic Ave). ($20)
  • For those participating in the Minecraft game play, please purchase a Minecraft Java license for your computer from Mojang if you do not yet have one ($26).
  • Class 2 – Wed 9/23 – History of The Ferris Wheel and the Pike’s Double Ferris Wheel. Building a simple Wheel with LEGO parts, gear ratios. Demo Power functions and WeDo robotics. (Trish, Paula)
  • Recommended Materials:
  • We expect that you will find your LEGO parts in your collection, or purchase on bricklink or the LEGO website. See video of the parts you need for the basic wheel.
  • Find the LEGO Parts for the wheel in your LEGO parts box.
  • Missing parts may be purchased online at Bricklink. or at the LEGO website.
  • For additional convenience, we make parts available for purchase at the kiosk in Shoreline Village for you to round out your wheel. Please budget 20c per part for wheel parts, pricing for gears and LEGO beams will be higher. Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Shipping/delivery options. Supplies are limited.
  • Class 3 – Mon 9/28 – Photographing the little technics wheel. Creating a support for the wheel. Capturing Minecraft images. Introduction to Photo Editing. Preparing images for Spoonflower. Intellectual Property and Using My Images and Creations. Minecraft Breakout if time permits. (Trish, Ann)
  • Recommended Equipment and software: Camera (or smartphone)
  • GIMP installed on your home computer.
  • A $5-$10 budget for purchase of fabric from Spoonflower (optional)
  • Class 4 – Wed 9/30 – Introduction to Hand Sewing and Machine Sewing. First fabric project. (Trish, Maria)
  • Required Materials: Needles, pins and a spool of thread OR sewing machine, pins and a spool of thread
  • Fat Quarter (1/2 yard fabric cut in 1/2) (may also use old T-shirt or other clothes) Fabric may be purchased from kiosk selection for $3.
  • Where to find materials: Joann’s (in store), Michael’s (online) or at the kiosk in Shoreline Village where we have a wide selection of fabrics from which you can choose.
  • Class 5 – Mon 10/5 – Sewing a simple, surgical style Mask. Hand sewing, machine sewing. (Trish, Ann)
  • Materials: Hand sewing supplies, Fat Quarter (see above).
  • Option for Trish’s Ferris Wheel spoonflower fabric fat quarter $7. *must be requested at beginning of series to permit ordering.
  • Class 6 – Wed 10/7 – Clay Ferris Wheels, Making Ferris Wheel molds and making candy. (Trish)
  • Materials:
  • Candy mold
  • mini Chocolate chips and/or Wilton’s candy melts
  • Clay for sculpting your wheel
  • Where to find materials:
  • If you already have a candy mold, please use it! If you are purchasing a mold, you may purchase Trish’s hand-vacu-formed Ferris wheel candy mold from the kiosk $5.
  • Mini chocolate chips may be found at your local candy store.
  • Wilton’s candy melts may be found at Michaels approx $5.
  • Clay (specify food safe clay) from Michaels or pick up from the kiosk (Reynolds?) $4.
  • Microwave or stove for melting candy (parent assisted).
  • Turn your sculpture into a candy mold you vacuform or we do it for you. Bring your sculpture to the Kiosk, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Please let us know in advance so we can bring the vacuforming equipment down to the Makerspace by the Sea.
  • Class 7 Mon 10/12 – The Pike Stories – Double Ferris Wheel Comic Book.
  • Recommended software Clip Studio Paint – Free trial. Please install in advance. If you wish to purchase the software, it is $50. online.
  • Class 8 – Wed 11/14 – Pike Ferris Wheel story video with the little Minecraft Wheel. Martin. What else can we do? Clubs, Makersville General Store.
  • Recommended software: Resolve video editing tool.
